Hemp and the Law

Hemp and Marijuana are close sisters, but not the same plant.

According to the US government, that statement does not matter. Even though industrial hemp, grown for seed and fiber, contains virtually no THC (the chemical in marijana that produces the "high"), it is still illegal to grow, even for industrial purposes or for food crop. Industrial hemp is considered DEA schedule one(which is the same category that heroin and crack are in).

Currently the only forms of hemp that are legal are the oil of the hemp seed, sterilized hemp seed and hemp fiber. It has to be processed into these forms before it can be imported. Possession of hemp in any other form is a crime, and cultivation is a felony.

Many countries have reformed their marijuna and hemp laws in recent years. Canada, The Netherlands, France, Germany, China, Korea, Hungary, Italy and Russia are all pro-hemp and export their hemp products to the countries that still have bans on cultivation of the hemp plant. Dozens of other countries have pro-hemp legislation in the works too.

If we are going to get our hemp laws reformed, we need to create a need for hemp here in the US. If the American people all love and are all buying hemp products, they are going to be more likely to vote in favor of reforming the hemp laws. After all, legal hemp is cheap hemp, and if hemp were legal in the US it would cost less than 15% of what it costs to import.
